Love Is a Holiday

Tomorrow in the morning I'll be off to the warm tropical lands. A couple of weeks away from worries. Needless to say, posting will be sporadic.

However, Merry Christmas greetings for my readers!

On The Reliability Of LGF

I just can't help going back to that. But the last time I slipped was quite a while ago.

Dennis keeps righteosuly hammering away at stupidity wherever it pops up, and while digging at Gates of Vienna - a website where hyperbole, to be charitable, abounds - unhearted the following statement:
I no longer consider Little Green Footballs to be a reliable source of information.
The point is, LGF has never been much of a source of information, but rather a relay or aggregator of stories. Charles and his peers have produced only a small amount of original information (the infamous Fake TANG Memo being the most relevant); most of the time what Charles does is to excerpt, reproduce and link stories produced by other sources.
So the issues of reliability and accuracy should be taken to the primary sources rather than LGF - which cannot be considered responsible for content by other authors.

What can legitimately be discussed is Charles's vetting process for the stories to be published. And in this he's severely lacking; he and his readers suffer from a severe case of confirmation bias:
Numerous studies have demonstrated that people generally give an excessive amount of value to confirmatory information, that is, to positive or supportive data. The "most likely reason for the excessive influence of confirmatory information is that it is easier to deal with cognitively" (Gilovich 1993).
Which causes them to accept uncritically any story that reflects badly on Islam, Europeans (yes, the very people), the Left, atheists and any other target. The in-depth (or should I say obsessive) parsing that is reserved to stories that reflect badly on America and a few other "good guys" simply does not exist in other cases. Prejudices? Very likely.
Then there are the "throwing bloody meat to the sharks" stories, which have little or no relevance to politics or the grand struggle of ideas, but appear only intended to reinforce prejudices and initiate orgies of lame jokes and the like.

Another issue is Charles' sneaky editorializing, such as dropping terms like "appeasement" and derivatives in the introductions to linked stories. CJ is definitely entitled to his own opinion and even to express it in sneaky ways, but it'd be far more constructive if sometimes he articulated in some more detail his positions and his proposals about the situation.
A recent case is this: CJ accuses the Philippine government of appeasing the Muslims separatists of in Mindanao. And the accusation may very well have grounds, but what is conspicuosly missing, both from the posts and comments, is what are the realistic alternatives. And with realistic I don't mean the "kill'em all" feverish dreams, but at least a half-competent discussion of the intentions and capabilities of all the parties involved.

Knowing all this, you can still extract some valuable information from LGF.

Referendum Costituzionale Europeo

Andate, firmate e diffondete l'idea. Grazie a The Devil's Kitchen.

Boria Prodiana

Prodi dixit:

Quindi, dov'ero rimasto?

Past the Threshold

I have become convinced that at the mighty age of 30 my body said "No more", because I've been in one sort of health trouble or the other since early September.

The cause was the incosciently massive overdose of chilli I had in August, which wrecked havoc in my lower abdomen. And no, I don't mean the runs, but an infection that required a prolonged antibiotics treatment. The infection also caused inflammations down there, and I'm still battling the last remnants of those.

Then yesterday I did a 1-km run, which isn't anything special even if I don't train constantly. Today, my left foot hurts so much I can barely put it on the ground - and it's swollen as well. Heel pain, which needs rest and anti-inflammatory drugs if it hurts too much. And I already planned a range trip for tomorrow, dammit.

Well, at least a herald patch of pityriasis rosea on my arm regressed and disappeared quickly. I guess I should be happy for the small blessings.

Inverno in Arrivo

The American Travellers

Kim and Connie DuToit are back from a trip to Europe - Wien and Germany, actually, and they did enjoy the experience. To the point them Kim stated he'd be quite willing to live Over Here at this point of his life - and this opinion of his got the more Murrican of his readers up in arms. As if that's some sort of betrayal.

I may disagree with Kim and his wife on some issues (what's all the fuss about tattoos, for example), but one thing I greatly appreciate of them is that, while being American through and through, they're not obtuse nationalists. They are willing and ready to concede there is beauty and goodness in other places, and the American lifestyle may not be the absolute best around the world. Connie says:
They are still able to afford to live on a single income--with mothers staying home to greet their children when they come home from school and stay home with their babies until they’re old enough to go to school. They think we’re slaves to the almighty dollar, that we’d trade the value of family for more temporary and disposable possessions. It’s priorities, of course, but calling them slaves? That’s meaningless. It’s just different priorities.
Different priorities indeed. We have more leisure time over here, and that means generally lower income. But can you honestly put a price on the time spent with your family, or friends? Is the "worker bee" life truly the best possible one?

Yes, we're less free than Americans in many and important regards. I noticed that, and on this blog I'm fighting my part of the intellectual struggle for liberty. Is that enough? I don't know; the other day I was very gloomy about the future of Italy. In any case, I've entered the Green Card lottery, and we'll see how it goes. My roots are here, and only a total loss of hope for the future will make me leave.

The point that Kim and Connie are making, I think, is that there is a tradeoff to be reached at some point. It's better to be a well-armed rancher in Texas, or to live without guns (of course these tools figure prominently in any discussion at Kim's place) as a citizen of a beautiful city like Vienna?

My summary is a semplifaction of course. In any case, different people at different times of their lives will reach different conclusions - and it's pretty hard to say which one is best in any absolute sense. That's the curious property of tradeoffs. In any case, I own a handgun; I can't legally carry it out of my place, but eventual intruders are going to get at least a look down the barrel, that I can tell.

Both many Europeans and Americans fail to see things in each other's perspective, and end up looking down upon each other with contempt. I think this is not good; especially now that the West is under attack from the outside and the inside too, a widening chasm between the two branches of western civilization is the worst thing we can have

You can see my thoughts on the matter remain a bit confused. That's because I have a lifetime experience of Europe - Italy most of all - but I've never been to the USA. I know folk who've visited there, and generally liked it. But they were simple tourists, they didn't really live like Americans do. I've been a tourist in Jakarta, Indonesia, and soon I'll go there again - this time as a traveller, living for a while with a middle-class family. Yes, this hasn't much to do with America, but I'll know another reality to compare to the one I grew up in. No knowledge is ever too much.

Estrapolazione Selvaggia

Mengamuk 2007

It is interesting to explore a bit of the history and distribution of killing sprees. Mengamuk (to go mad with rage) is the Malay word for the phenomenon, but many languages have equivalent expressions - in Italian, an episode of murderous rage is often called raptus (di follia - "of insanity" is frequently attached). The words raptus and rapture share the same root. The Norse instead had the berserker, a warrior unleashing his fury against the enemies in battle. Cases of "divine possession" of warriors who then fight with superhuman vigor are part even of the Greek mithology.

Notice anything? Yes, the mengamuk phenomenon vastly predates the invention of firearms. Even today, in south-east Asia the weapons of choice remain bladed ones.
One may argue that firearms make killing sprees more lethal, but even that is debatable: the Filipino man in the story cited above killed 10 people with a bladed weapon; according to the 1911 Webster Enciclopedia:
Thus, in 1634, the eldest son of the raja of Jodhpur ran amok at the court of Shah Jahan, failing in his attack on the emperor, but killing five of his officials. During the 18th century, again, at Hyderabad (Sind), two envoys, sent by the Jodhpur chief in regard to a quarrel between the two states, stabbed the prince and twenty-six of his suite before they themselves fell.
These casualty figures are similar if not higher than those of some modern-day killing sprees involving firearms.

Episodes of raptus (as separated from passional murder) in Italy occur most often within married couples or families, and rarely involve people out of blood or close friendship bonds. The weapons used by the killers are the most disparate: I've heard of knives, axes, hammers, iron bars and other blunt objects - and of course guns. In a particularly horrible case, a petrol station owner being tried (if I remember correctly; it was long ago) for sexual violence against his children forced himself and his whole family into a puddle of gasoline and set everything on fire.
There is something dark and bloody in the human heart.
Indeed, I say, and no amount of gun control is going to change that.

Confusion on Concentration

Concentration, in the scientific and technical field, is the amount or fraction of a given substance in a mixture. In some contexts it can be imagined as the "crowding" of molecules in a given space - more on this later.

Knowing concentrations has a huge practical importance. It may make a difference between an ore body that is worth mining and one that isn't; the difference between a medicine that cures and one that doesn't (or even kills) and so on.

It also can make the difference between a reaction that proceeds smoothly, and one that suffers an explosive runaway. This is because reaction rates are proportional to (some power of) the collision frequency between reactant molecules, which is in turn proportional to (a function) of concentration of reactants - their crowding in a region of space.

There are many ways to express concentration, each tailored to specific needs - and sometimes, to achieve a specific effect. For example, it's more scary to say that the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide is close to 400 ppm (by volume) than to say it's close to 0.04% (by volume).
Concentration can also be expressed on different bases - mass, volume, moles etc - it's important to know clearly which base is being used to avoid mistakes.
While it's often practical to express concentrations on a volume basis, there are two conflicting issues. While mass is absolute, volume is a function of temperature, and this introduces a further complication; on the other hand, it's easier to handle liquids than solids.

A very common expression for concentration, used extensively in industry and medicine and also chemistry is percent (%). Percent is straightforward: it says how many units of a particular substance there are in 100 units of mixture. A typical application works like this: in order to prepare 1o liters of 5% erbicide solution you measure half a liter of erbicide formulation and dissolve it in 9 and half liters of water; great accuracy is not required.
Usually percent is expressed on a weight basis, but it can be by volume or mole - for mixtures of gases at low pressure, percent by volume and mole are identical. For dilute aqueous solutions only, water can be measured by volume rather than weight. UPDATE: I made some confusion: the density of dilute aqueous solutions can be taken as 1 - while this is erroneous for concentrate ones.

An unit that is often encountered while discussing pollution and environmental issues is the part per million (ppm). It means that there is one part of a chemical in one million parts of mixture. Usually it is on a volume or mass basis - one gram in a metric tone is one ppm. The ppm is intended to be used for low concentrations, and in my humble opinion using numbers like 100 000 ppm is misleading.

Chemists like to think in terms of moles. That's because chemical reactions are written in terms of moles (which are defined as a fixed number of molecules), so it makes sense to express also concentration as moles on volume or mass. So the former is molarity (moles per liter of solution) and the latter is molality (moles per kilogram of solution). Molarity is used very often, also because it fits well to volumetric analysis: when the volume of a titrating solution of known concentration is known, working out the number of moles is straightforward. For example, 10 mL of hydrochloric acid 1M contain 0.01 moles of HCl. In the case of pure substances, we talk of molar density rather than molar concentration.
Molality doesn't enjoy widespread use, mainly because it becomes useful only when discussing rather subtle things such as activity of solutes: dealing with activities is more complex and is required only for precision work or in particular fields.

Another expression for concentration (that I personally like a lot) is the mole fraction (χ), defined as the number of moles of one component divided by the summation of the number of moles of all components in the mixture. It has some interesting properties: the partial pressure of a gas in misture is equal to the product of mole fraction by total pressure, and it happens that equilibrium constants and often reaction rates for gas-phase reactions are expressed as a function of partial pressures. Some properties of solutions are proportional to the mole fraction of solute or solvent, and mole fractions are the coefficients to use in linear combinations - for example, if a gaseous mixture has to be treated as a single gas, its properties are given by a linear combination of the properties of the different components.

All concentration units can be converted into another with some maths. However, it's a tricky practice and often it requires to know the density of the solution or mixture. But density is rather troublesome quantity: difficult to predict even for simple systems, it's also difficult to measure with good accuracy.

Intelligence Intelligente
