The Second Version

08/08/08

No Intervention

Fierce fighting has broken out between the ex-soviet republic of Georgia and the secessionist reagion of South Ossetia.

What should we - the West do?
I say, unless there are very important strategic interests at stake, just nothing. Let them slug it out and then deal with the winner.

That's better than the post-modern wars that never end because the "international community" keeps saving the loser's ass.

Of course, in the specific case the Bear isn't going to ignore the racket on its doorstep. Another factor to ponder before deciding for intervention.

Update 09/08: Not surpisingly, Russia has joined the fray. Georgia is pro-western and an USA ally; is it worth to support the republic as a proxy against the reborn Russian expansionism?
